Comments by Rep. Steve Pearce on the future of funding for the Spaceport Development
"When President Kennedy first challenged America to put a man on the moon in a decade, many people doubted that we could achieve that goal, but the American spirit prevailed. As Southern New Mexico stands on the cusp of establishing the first private gateway to the stars, I want to encourage all my fellow New Mexicans to stand with me and make the Spaceport a reality.
"This kind of major economic development requires extensive support from many different sources. The Spaceport will only become a reality if the four legs of support, Federal, State, Local and Private funding, are built solidly beneath it.
"Billions of dollars will be spent by private industry and the government during the next ten years to create spaceships for lower cost flight into outer space. New Mexico has the tremendous opportunity to be the first State to create a spaceport with excellent weather, high altitude, and 24/7 launch windows. By doing that, we will be leading the most revolutionary business of the 21st Century. Our competitors in other States can take this business away from New Mexico but only if New Mexico does not accept the challenge of investing in the future.
